OLP is happy to offer the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) for our students. The program was started in 2011, and since then Archery has been added to the P.E. curriculum, including archery safety and competitive shooting. With studies showing that Archery in the schools improve focus, it has become a safe opportunity for girls and boys to improve their concentration skills while having fun. This is just one of the reasons that Archery has become one of the fastest growing sports in the United States.
The OLP Archery team is led by parent volunteer coaches and consists of two competitive age groups: Elementary (4th and 5th grades) and Middle School (6th through 8th grades). Teams consist of 12 - 24 archers. The season usually begins in November and runs until close of the season's competitions (State, Nationals and Worlds), in June. With an increase in involvement in the sport, we have had two teams from each group in the past years. To maintain this level, we are in need of additional parent volunteers to keep it going, especially on the Elementary level. Just ask one of the coaches during the parent meeting how to get involved.
Now that you know more about the program, it is easy to join in on the fun. At the beginning of each school year, there will be a mandatory parent meeting to provide a sport overview for those that are not familiar, season expectations, participation requirements, sign-up and team shirt ordering.
